Our annual seminar will be held at LINZ’s premises in Wellington.

The seminar will align closely with the World Hydrographic Day (WHD) and will feature presentations from Government, industry, Defence and academia focused around the WHD theme of “Our seas and oceans – still to be explored and charted.

In conjunction with the seminar, planning is underway to include a tour of LINZ’s office focusing on hydrographic charting. This will be followed by the Seminar and then the NZR’s AGM. An informal dinner will be arranged in the evening for those interested.

Call for Presentations – “Our seas and oceans – still to be explored and charted”

The New Zealand hydrographic community has been actively involved in a number of projects and activities that are of significance to increasing the environmental knowledge and charting within our region. The true value of improving this knowledge is difficult to quantify but should not be underestimated. The volume and value of seaborne trade and the ability to ensure its safe passage is fundamental to the economy of most regional nations; further the potential value for future economic growth through the ability to access resources contained within the maritime domain are high on the agenda for most nations.

This year’s WHD theme provides a broad platform for presenters to relate their activities in technological development, innovation, new products or services; collaborative opportunities; education, academic and tradecraft development; and other areas for improving the knowledge of the unexplored and uncharted. Therefore presentation topics such as the following are suitable:

·         Emerging technology or equipment to improve efficiency in data collection or access to remote and unexplored areas.

·         Opening of access to new waterways for commercial trade and cruise ships/tourism or exploration.

·         National and international collaborative efforts to advance national and regional charting and

environmental knowledge.

·         Exploration of the marine based natural resource.

·         Furthering the profession and increasing the hydrographic tradecraft through university based research,

training, and development of new techniques and technologies,

·         Defence hydrography and military techniques to further Safety of Navigation, security, access and

regional engagement.

·         Innovative survey methods or surveys being conducted in NZ or regionally NZ hydrographic SME,

·         LINZ, national and international efforts to improve the national and regional charting and knowledge.

Presentations (normally PowerPoint based) should be 15 minutes in duration followed by 5 minutes for questions. If you wish to provide a presentation, please send a short abstract to Kevin Smith (kevin@dmlsurveys.co.nz) by 1st May 2015.
