The Australasian Hydrographic Society (AHS), WA chapter, would like to invite AHS members and guests to join us for our first Evening Technical Meeting of 2023.

The upcoming event will be held at Curtin University’s state of the art HIVE visualization facility.

The Curtin HIVE (Hub for Immersive Visualisation and eResearch) is an advanced facility established by Curtin University to serve the growing demands of researchers and industry for visualisation, virtualisation and simulation capabilities in Western Australia.

The presentations will be presented in immersive 3D on the large wrap-around Cylinder projection display in the HIVE.

We are delighted to have speakers and attendees joining from the Australian Hydrographic Office (AHO), WA Department of Transport (DoT), Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety, and Curtin University.

Ralph Talbot-Smith, Manager Cartographic Services – WA DoT

Western Australia’s Department of Transport (DoT) plays an integral part in collecting and coordinating spatial data for effective management of Western Australia’s Coastal organisations.

Western Australian has a coastline approximating 20,000 kilometers of marine & coastal environments of which only 25% has been surveyed and effectively mapped.

Ralph will be outlining some initiatives to map significant parts of the WA Coast to assist in the assessment of potential coastal inundation as a result of climate change and modelling of erosion hotspots and watchspots around the state.

The presentation will also cover the AusSeabed, web portal and overview of Department of Transports Bathymetric Data.

Carolyn Martin, General Manager Data and Spatial Innovation, Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety

Carolyn was the recipient of the 2014 AHS Education Award. As part of her AHS award, Carolyn photographed numerous wreck sites at Truk Lagoon, Micronesia. Truk Lagoon is the final resting place for over 70  WWII era ships, planes and submarines. The imagery has subsequently been processed into 3D models by this year's AHS Education Award Winner.

Carolyn will present her work leading up to her 2014 AHS award, and subsequent expedition to Micronesia to capture images of sunken aircraft for digital reconstruction. She explains challenges and opportunities associated with scuba-based data capture, and will demonstrate 3d models produced from her images by this year's AHS education award winner.

Daniel Adams, Research Assistant, Curtin University

Daniel is the recipient of the 2022 AHS education award and will be presenting on his work utilizing underwater image processing algorithms for the purpose of generating high-quality photogrammetric 3D reconstructions. Daniel will discuss these methods in the context of maritime archaeology and will provide insight into how they can be of benefit to the breadth of disciplines that underwater imaging covers.

Associate Professor Andrew Woods, HIVE Manager, Curtin University

Andrew will describe the large-scale shipwreck photogrammetric 3D reconstruction project they are currently undertaking in collaboration with the Western Australian Museum, the Australian National Maritime Museum and the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre in which they are creating details 3D models of the wrecks of HMAS Sydney (II), HSK Kormoran (both lost in 1942) and HMAS AE1 (lost 1914).
