The AHS is pleased to announce the upcoming event:
Influences and monitoring of tidal and non-tidal water levels
16:30- 19:30 Thursday 1st August, 2024
Indian Ocean Marine Research Centre Auditorium
The University of Western Australia 54, Fairway, Crawley WA 6009
Agenda:
16:30 – 17:00 Arrival, Networking & Beverages
17:00 – 17:30
GNSS Tides, AusHydroid and the development of a Fremantle built GNSS Tide Buoy - For hydrography and beyond
Charles Collins, Co-Founder, FreoOceans
A brief introduction to why measuring tides with GNSS is important to hydrography. The importance of the national AusHydroid project, progress to date and where we are going from here.
Addressing these requirements for more extensive tide buoy demand, Freoocean’s have developed a GNSS buoy from their experience in Australia’s wide-ranging environments. The buoy is built in Fremantle and has many oceanographic applications in addition to supporting hydrography. We will present our story, lessons learned along the way and the future of the Sharkbuoy.
17:30 – 18:00
Non-tidal water levels in Western Australia: implications for tidal analysis and datums
Jeff Hansen, Associate Professor, School of Earth Sciences, UWA Oceans Institute
In Western Australia (WA) a variety of oceanographic processes, not related to astronomic tides, can result in sea level variability across a range of time scales from days to several years. In the micro-tidal southwest of WA, these non-tidal water level fluctuations can be of the same magnitude as the astronomic tides. In this presentation I will provide an overview of the processes that result in these not-tidal water levels and explain how they may impact traditional tidal analysis and datums which are important for hydrographic surveying and similar applications.
18:00 – 19:00
Networking drinks and nibbles
This is a free event to attend, drinks and nibbles will be provided.
